About

Session Overview

Ollama is an open-source platform that makes it possible to download and run generative AI (GenAI) models directly on your laptop or workstation. With Ollama, you can run a variety of open-source AI models for tasks such as basic chat, text analysis, audio transcription, and image recognition. Because these models run locally on your computer rather than through a cloud-based service such as ChatGPT or Gemini, Ollama can give you more control over where and how your data is processed.

In this workshop, we’ll introduce Ollama and explore the kinds of AI models you can download and run locally. We’ll discuss the benefits and limitations of local AI and when it might be useful for your work. We’ll also demonstrate how to use locally running models to analyze text and images with Python and Unix command-line tools.

No Python or Unix experience is required. This workshop is designed to be accessible and useful for participants with a range of technical backgrounds. Participants with Python or command-line experience are welcome to code along with the demonstrations, but coding is optional and not required to participate.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the benefits and limitations of running open-source AI models locally.
  • Identify situations in which a local GenAI model might be useful for your work.
  • Describe the types of open-source AI models available through Ollama for working with text, audio, and images.
  • Understand how Ollama can be used to download and run AI models on a local computer.
  • For participants interested in hands-on coding, use Python and command-line tools to interact with a locally running model for basic text and image analysis.
