Please join Allison Schmitt, Director of the UC Berkeley Center on Law and Technology's  Life Sciences Law and Policy Center, to learn more about the IP issues faced by researchers and innovators, including patenting algorithms and outputs, and the potential and limits of infringement and enforcement. Presentation will also address how US patent law approaches inventor status, use of trade secrets to protect algorithms and data, and best practices in diligence and commercialization for algorithm-dependent inventions and companies.

Allison Schmitt is the inaugural director of the Life Sciences Law and Policy Center at the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology.  Her research focuses on the impacts of intellectual property, regulatory regimes, and governmental and private funding on innovation pathways in the life sciences.  Allison also serves as a lecturer at Berkeley Law, and as a fellow at Berkeley Law and as part of the Berkeley Law - Haas Fellowship Program.  She previously spent several years in private practice focused on life science patent litigation, patent counseling, and policy matters. She clerked for the Honorable Stanley R. Chesler at the District of New Jersey, and the Honorable Kathleen M. O’Malley at the Federal Circuit.  Allison holds a J.D. from UC Berkeley School of Law and a Ph.D. from Duke University in Chemistry.
